What is Housing Authority?
Has your landlord ever broken the law?
Do you get a jolt of anxiety every time you see a letter posted on your door or an email from your property manager?
Are you coming to the realization that you’ll probably never buy a house?
Do you ever go on Next Door and want to commit arson against property owners?
Have you ever dreamed about creating a tenants union?
Housing Authority is a newsletter about fighting landlords.
We categorize our content in three buckets with several core supporting arguments.
Understanding the Housing Crisis 🔍
Our housing crisis is the logical conclusion of commodified housing
Being a renter is a political position that is in opposition to owning property
Residential alienation is a product of our housing crisis and an important tool in maintaining commodification and oppression
Housing Wonk Shit 🏡
Policy reform inherently makes the state more resilient to change, HOWEVER it is necessary for harm reduction while we build stronger class solidarity and increase class consciousness
Our housing market would not exist without housing policy and police enforcement, they are inextricably linked
Those closest to the problem are the ones closest to the solution and should inform policies
Building A Better Housing Future 💭
Housing is a social product, which means we have the power to make housing accessible to everyone
Housing is a cornerstone of community and liberation when we have stable housing, we thrive
Housing has been captured by finance and capital as a means of consolidating power conversely, housing the people should be an end in itself
When should you expect to hear from us?
Probably quarterly. But we both work full-time and like to see our friends, so we will fall off.
Who is us?
Cam and Rebekah started tenant organizing in March 2020 when the world went sideways and since then have learned too much about how and why our housing system is fucked up that they needed to talk about it. They live together in Portland, Oregon with their cat named Stellaluna. Rebekah works in housing policy at the state level, advocating in the Oregon State Legislature and tries her best to push housing policy development to further support tenants.
